Les Contes d'Hoffman

I went to the Met's revival of Les Contes d'Hoffman last night and wrote a review for parterre. An excerpt:

A wise man once said: “It’s absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” Vittorio Grigolo may be a narcissist, but at least he’s a charming one.

The above is the wonderful Erin Morley's Doll Song.

  1. Hi Ivy,

I had to go to parterre.com (interesting place for opinions!) to read your great review of "Contes". I saw it a few yrs.back with Calleja and Netrebko(great) in a production that showed all that's wrong with a broadway director doing opera. I remember specifically the first act scene where the waiters(?) put table cloths over themselves and hopped around looking like talis wearing hasidic students at a yeshiva. Will I have to go to parterre to get your fabulous reviews from here on? Could be fun.

    1. No I post here too, especially my dance reviews. It just depends whether La Cieca asks me to review for parterre.

On the other hand, we should be thankful that Sher didn't set Contes in Las Vegas or during the Spanish civil war.

I saw Grigolo's Met debut as Rodolpho a few yrs.back and yes, he was bouncing all over the place but I was impressed with the beauty of his voice and the way it easily carried in the Met.
